Our History
Soho Photo Gallery has come a long way since it was established in 1971 by a group of New York Times photographers as an alternative to commercial galleries. It is now the only non-profit cooperative photography gallery in New York City, with over 110 members. Soho Photo is completely run by its members who direct, operate and financially support the Gallery. Among the well-known photographers who have exhibited here are Andre Kertesz, Ansel Adams, Jill Freedman, Joel Sternfeld and Jill Enfield. The Gallery is regularly featured in local newspapers, trade and national publications. Our website, www.sohophoto.com, is regularly updated with announcements of new exhibits and other gallery events. Or follow us on Facebook.
Exhibits and Competitions
The Gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays, from 1 pm to 6 pm, and by appointment. We host eleven monthly exhibitions of work by our members and invited guest artists. Our exhibition space offers room for four solo exhibitors on the main floor. Each exhibit bay measures approximately 32 linear feet. Additional space is designated for spotlight exhibitions and group shows. The mezzanine is reserved for guest artists and special exhibitions. We also present seminars, hands-on workshops, guest lecturers and events dealing with photographic techniques and issues, such as palladium printing, Polaroid transfers, pinhole photography, and digital technology.
The Gallery sponsors three juried annual national events. The well-known Krappy Kamera® Competition is devoted to photographs taken with plastic, toy or homemade cameras. Our National Competition is open to all photographic techniques. The Alternative Processes Competition features images printed by any process other than gelatin silver or digital, such as platinum, palladium, cyanotype, etc.
